Cone beam computed tomography (CBCT)

We are excited to offer Cone Beam Computed Tomography (CBCT) at South Burlington Endodontics, and explain why this advanced technology is such a useful tool.  Cone beam technology allows us to take a small field of view, 3D scan of your tooth, and the surrounding structures.  This scan contains information that is vital to proper diagnosis and treatment – information that is often not readily apparent from conventional 2D imaging.

Taking a scan takes about 30 seconds, and we can interpret that scan chairside.  The small field of view that is used in endodontics shows roughly two to five teeth in the area of interest.  This provides exceptional clarity with very little radiation (less than one conventional bitewing radiograph).

The American Association of Endodontists and the American Academy of Oral and Maxillofacial Radiology issued a joint statement on the use of CBCT in endodontics.  This statement recommends a pre-operative CBCT in every endodontic retreatment, every endodontic surgery, for cases of contradictory signs/symptoms, and when the clinician is suspicious of complex anatomy.

In addition, CBCT can help us in cases where there may be a vertical root fracture.  The CBCT generally will not show an actual fracture line in a tooth, but can show patterns of bone loss around a fracture that provide additional support to the diagnosis.

We are proud at South Burlington Endodontics to provide the highest level of care through modern advancements in technology.  The CBCT improves our practice, and improves patient’s experience.
